A colonoscopy is a safe, nonsurgical procedure that helps your doctor evaluate your digestive health. It may be recommended as a screening test to check for colon cancer or to investigate digestive symptoms.

During the procedure, your doctor uses a thin, flexible tube with a tiny camera to examine the lining of your colon and rectum. The camera sends images to a monitor, allowing your doctor to view your digestive tract in detail.
If polyps or other growths are found, they can often be removed or biopsied during the same procedure. Most patients receive intravenous sedation and medication, which helps minimize discomfort and makes the exam easier to tolerate.
A colonoscopy provides important information to help your doctor determine the best next steps for your health.
