Measles Fact Sheet for Patients
Measles is a highly contagious viral illness. It spreads through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. People can be contagious before they even show symptoms.
Symptoms of measles may include:
- High fever
- Cough
- Runny nose
- Red, watery eyes (conjunctivitis)
- Rash that usually starts on the face and spreads
How to protect yourself and others:
- Stay home and avoid contact with others until cleared by a healthcare provider.
- Follow all isolation instructions carefully.
- Vaccination is the best protection against measles. The MMR vaccine is safe and effective.
If you believe you’ve been exposed or have symptoms, call your healthcare provider before going inside any clinic or hospital.
